Many words come to mind when I think of my mother. Love and Sass are the top two. She is on of the sassiest women I know. She never let men speak down to her, always speaks her mind, and fought for complete independence from a very young age. This photo was taken in 1956, my mother was about 2 years old and already full of personality. About 10 years after this photo, she had to get surgery to remove her spleens. That’s right, spleens. She had four, and by age 12 they had cleaned her slightly oddly shaped red blood cells from her blood so “well” that they had to be removed completely. The women in my family all have varying degrees of Hereditary Spherocytosis, my mothers the most intense of all. Her spleens are now on display at the University of Washington.

I love you mom. You’ve gone through hell and back, and you’re still kicking (with extra zing!). Thanks for setting a great example for me, and women everywhere.
